The logo attained much deserved recognition in the name of the legendary French player, Rene Lacoste. However the logo made its mark in the apparel sector with the origin of Lacoste embroidered polo shirts which was later adopted as the basic uniform by the tennis players not only in France, but also worldwide. The history behind embroidered polo shirts takes us back to the early 1920’s when tennis apparel used to be formal. A major change was brought about in women's tennis apparel-calf length cotton frocks became their newly acquired uniform. This had a drastic impact on the men’s tennis apparel as well, which thereby marked the advent of a newly defined fashion emblem in the form of Lacoste embroidered polo shirts. The light weight fabric content, moisture resistant ability and perfect finishing added immensely to its value commercially.
