The Royal Mail has created a series of promotional stamps featuring uniforms from the history of the Royal Air Force (RAF).This marks the second instalment in a collection showcasing British military uniforms, and includes three First Class and three 81 pence stamps featuring a different RAF uniform. Going in reverse chronological order, the stamps start with the present day and the RAF Blue uniform of a Drum Major from the Central Band.The series then tracks 20th century history of RAF uniforms to the leather-wearing pilot of World War I Britain. Julietta Edgar, Royal Mail head of special stamps, commented: "The stamps are a striking collection which celebrate and chart the history of RAF uniforms". "The uniforms combine practicality with instant recognition across the military forces, worldwide for the RAF.""The issue coincides with the service's 90th anniversary and celebrates the many aspects of the RAF; from pilots to plotters and from winchman to Drum Major," she added. Following this, the series will then cover the uniforms of the Royal Navy which is due to go on sale in 2009.
