A Merseyside mother has won a victory over Lancashire County Council regarding grants provided for school workwear.
The council previously announced its intention to abolition the annual £30,000 expenditure in the Wirral region on school workwear grants for low income households.
However, former NHS support worker Julie Walker has forced the council to back down after campaigning against the plans with help from the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The 43-year-old, who was forced to give up her job due to ill health, told the Liverpool Echo: "Parents in Wirral should know that because its covered under the Education Act 1996, councils should help people who may get into difficulty."
"I asked about uniforms in the Citizens Advice Bureau and they told me that my council had abolished grants in 2006," she continued. "They decided a solicitor could help me and that there were grounds for judicial review."
"The council decided very quickly that they didn't want that and said although new procedures could take a while, people could start applying again for the grants," Ms Walker added.
Ms Walker will now receive a £120.24 grant for workwear for her daughters Lucy and Gemma.
Lancashire County Council is also engaged in a full-scale policy review to set new regulations on workwear grants throughout the county.
