Pupils attending the Thurstable School in Tiptree are not allowed to wear non-uniform coats while on school premises. This is because children must dress in official workwear, which includes a blazer, polo shirt with skirt or trousers, so that local residents can distinguish them from "juvenile delinquents".However, one mother told the Maldon and Burnham Standard that "in these weather conditions, the school should be more lenient". "The old uniform was more practical and at least they had the long-sleeved shirt and the tie kept your neck a bit warmer," she added. Miles Bacon, head teacher at the school, defended the use of the workwear by saying that it is "completely adequate" to defend against the cold.
